A gravestone is an object created when a Worm dies.

Creation[]

When a Worm runs out of energy, it will blow itself up and the gravestone selected for the team will appear in the exact location of the Worm. The explosion from this can cause up to 25 points of damage, and may kill other Worms and cause a chain reaction. In Worms Clan Wars and Worms Battlegrounds the Heavy class causes a big explosion whereas the Scout causes a small one. No gravestone is created if a Worm dies by drowning in the water at the bottom of the level, uses Kamikaze or drops a Donor Card instead.

Use[]

The use of a gravestone varies between games, and the gravestone does not always have a use, but a gravestone can be used to resurrect a Worm with a Lightning Strike (3rd generation games onwards), or to obtain a random weapon from the dead Worm's inventory using Gravedigger (4th generation games). The explosion upon death may occasionally cause the attacker, or any other Worm nearby, to die and it puts a hole in the landscape if the terrain can be destroyed.

Customisation[]

In the first Worms, the only gravestone is a simple white cross, but in Worms Reinforcements players may select one of eight. Worms 2 removed the choice in favor of a cross with the team's colour. In Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party there is a choice of six animated graves and several static images. Players can use their own images by placing them in the User\Graves directory. The file must be a 24x32 BMP in 8-bit colour. User-made gravestones are readily available online.

In newer games, additional gravestones can be unlocked through missions, deathmatch challenges and/or in-game shops, with additional one available for purchase in DLC packs. Worms Clan Wars allows players to share custom graves on the Steam Workshop.
